Generate More Medicare Leads

As an independent agent or agency, you already know that generating a steady stream of qualified Medicare leads is essential to increase Medicare sales and build a sustainable book of business. However, you also probably know how challenging it can be to generate these leads, particularly when there’s so much competition in your market.

Even experienced Medicare agents can struggle to consistently find new prospects, making Medicare lead generation an important part of any successful marketing strategy. The right leads give agents more opportunities to educate consumers, build relationships, and ultimately help more people find Medicare coverage that fits their needs. For many independent agents, partnering with an experienced, national FMO can also make the lead-generation process more effective by providing access to lead programs, marketing resources, technology, training, carriers, and other tools designed to help agents grow their Medicare business.

In this guide, we’ll explore 20 Medicare lead generation methods for independent agents and explain how each strategy can help you generate more Medicare leads, connect with prospective clients, and increase your Medicare sales. To help agents form a Medicare marketing plan, we’ve broken these down into four primary categories – Inbound, Outbound, Networking, and Branding.

Inbound Medicare Marketing

Inbound marketing is a strategy focused on attracting potential customers to your business rather than actively pursuing them through outbound prospecting. The core idea is to educate and provide value first, rather than immediately trying to sell.

For Medicare agents, this means creating useful information and experiences that help people find the agent when they are researching Medicare. Consumers often research Medicare, and other insurance coverage options, extensively before they are ready to speak with an agent. By answering their questions and providing helpful resources, an agent can establish credibility and build trust before the sales conversation begins.

1. SEO for Medicare-Related Keywords

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a long-term digital marketing strategy, the goal of which is to increase the visibility of a web presence by pushing it to the top of the search engine results pages, such as Google Search or Bing. It is a complicated, multi-faceted strategy that can require a lot of ongoing footwork – but it can also provide consistent, ongoing results when done correctly. For agents who want to leverage SEO for Medicare lead generation, it’s important to kick-off your SEO  efforts sooner so that you can begin building your online presence.

If you’re interested in learning more, we’ve got you covered; check out our SEO Best Practices for Insurance Agents blog to learn how you can establish a solid foundation for your SEO efforts to support your Medicare lead generation for years to come. Additionally, all of the following tactics in the Inbound segment of this article are all designed to contribute to your SEO growth, so be sure to follow along and put all of these ideas into practice!

2. Educational Blogging

If content creation is the cornerstone of SEO, then blogging is the engine for your content creation strategy. Best of all, there is very little overhead required to build a blog. If you have a website for your agency (and you absolutely should), then you likely already have the tools you need! When creating content for your insurance agency blog, be sure to focus on topics that would be most valuable to your potential customers. Then, when users are researching their Medicare options online, your website will be more likely to appear in the search results because you’ve written a relevant blog article that aligns with their search criteria.

You can create blogs for just about any topic that is relevant to your readers: thoughtful answers to your customers’ most common questions, share the latest Medicare news to ensure that they have all the information they need to make an informed decision about their coverage, and demystify common misconceptions about Medicare. Just be sure that your content is entirely original and that you don’t rely on AI to write everything for you. If you want to learn more about the potential downsides of using AI to build your content, please be sure to check out our article about the Pros & Cons of AI for Medicare Agents.

3. Medicare Guides

If you want to take your blogging one step further, you could create longer, more comprehensive guides, e-books or white papers to post on your website. Much like blogs, these are designed to appear in the search engine results pages to pull users into your website where they will (ideally) convert to leads. However, these guides are typically much longer and more robust. Whereas a blog should be anywhere between 800 – 1200 words, a guide could be upwards of 2500 words, covering the minutia of a given topic.

If your goal is to increase your Medicare lead generation, then you might want to consider creating a guide about Medicare. It should cover just about every bit of information that would be relevant to your users; the history of Medicare, what it can cover, the various parts of Medicare, what the application process looks like, etc. If you want to see some examples of comprehensive guides, be sure to check out our Ultimate Guide to Special Needs Plans and our Guide to Starting Your Own Insurance Agency.

4. Podcasting

This one can require a bit more overhead, but can be particularly effective at establishing your expertise and growing your customer base. Podcasting has never been more popular, and digital toolkits have made this a very accessible option for tech-savvy agents. Just as blogging is a crucial component of content creation, podcasting allows you to diversify your content efforts by creating audio or video assets that can be posted online to draw an audience. Platforms like YouTube make it free and relatively easy to post video content, which can then even be embedded into your website to capture views on both platforms. If you want to see an example, be sure to check out an episode of our own Insurance 360 Podcast – designed for independent agents and insurance professionals!

5. Video Content Marketing

Whereas a podcast tends to be longform audio or video content, Medicare agents can leverage short-form video content marketing to improve their lead generation. Using nothing more than your smartphone, agents can create videos ranging from 30 seconds to a few minutes in length that can be posted on their YouTube, embedded on their websites, and shared on various social media platforms. Just like your other content pieces, these short videos should focus on educating your audience on the various aspects of Medicare. If you’re especially enterprising, you could even string together multiple of these short-form videos to create one longer piece, repurposing your content to create something new. If you need some video inspiration, feel free to check out Pinnacle Financial Services’ shorts on our YouTube channel.

Outbound Medicare Marketing

Outbound marketing is a proactive approach in which an agent initiates contact with prospective clients rather than waiting for them to discover the agent. The fundamental idea behind outbound marketing is “go where the prospects are.” Instead of waiting for someone to search for Medicare information and find the agent, the agent actively identifies audiences that may need Medicare guidance and reaches out to them. This level of outreach ranges from passive to active, but here are a few tried-and-true outbound Medicare marketing tactics you can explore.

6. Search Engine Advertising

If you don’t have the time to wait for your SEO efforts to kick in, then you may want to explore the possibility of running digital ads on Google or Bing. These are the sponsored results that appear at the top of the search results pages when you enter a query into your search engine. This allows you to achieve instant visibility within the search results, though you will need to pay for each click your ads receive. However, you can fine-tune your campaigns so that you are showing up above your competitors for high-value keywords, which can very quickly generate leads for your Medicare business.

This solution has a heavy learning curve, requiring you to understand platforms like Google Ads before you can run ads efficiently. While Google Ads does have options to get new users started quickly, we advise our agent partners to take these quick and easy solutions with a grain of salt; typically, you’ll get much better results from your digital ads by learning the platform and manually setting up your ads rather than leveraging Google’s “out-the-box” solutions. Luckily, there are numerous online resources to help you learn how to make the most of your Google Ads campaigns!

7. Social Media Advertising

Similar to Google Ads, each of your favorite social media platforms features their own advertising platforms to help you reach a larger audience. Social ads allow agencies to target users who are not already aware of their brands, building awareness and driving traffic that may convert to qualified leads. These platforms typically have a lower learning curve than Google Ads, though the reach is much lower, particularly because platforms like Facebook have limitations on promoting anything that is related to healthcare (which includes Medicare). For Medicare agents who want to explore social media advertising, your best bet would be to start with Meta Ads which allows you to advertise on Facebook and Instagram.

8. Email Marketing

If you have a list of prospect emails, then email marketing can be a valuable tool in your Medicare promotion toolkit. This can be a great method to nurture your existing leads, helping to guide them toward your agency’s services over time. Best of all, the cost of email marketing is relatively low compared to more traditional mail marketing, and it’s often something that can be done entirely in-house as long as you have an email distribution channel like Constant Contact or MailChimp.

9. Marketing Automation

Want to take your email marketing efforts even further to get greater results? As a leading Medicare FMO, Pinnacle Financial Services provides our agents with access to our proprietary BOSS platform. It’s more than just a next-gen CRM designed for insurance agents. BOSS features automation features that allows agents to create emails and build automated workflows that send engaging emails and text messages. You choose the scheduling of these emails to suit the needs of your growing business with this highly-customizable solution. If you sell more than Medicare, BOSS has you covered. You can build automations for every one of your insurance products to broaden your digital outreach efforts!

10. Direct Mail Marketing

If you have access to a mailing list, direct mail marketing is still a viable option when it comes to your outreach efforts. Recent data from the Association of National Advertisers indicates that mail pieces that promote healthcare-related services have about a response rate of 4.09%. While this may not seem like much, it breaks down to about 200 responses for every 5,000 pieces sent. If you need assistance designing these assets, partnering with an FMO can give you access to creative services for insurance agents which can be invaluable for your outbound marketing.

11. Phone Prospecting

Phone prospecting is a classic marketing strategy for Medicare agents, and for a good reason. Agents have great success with phone outreach efforts, especially when it is combined with other forms of marketing such as email, social media, etc. When contacting leads, just be sure that you are abiding by compliance standards. At Pinnacle, we provide our agents with training and guidance they need to remain compliant throughout their promotional efforts.

Networking for Medicare Leads

Networking allows Medicare agents to build professional relationships with people and organizations that can lead to referrals, partnerships, and new business opportunities. For independent insurance agents, networking can include attending local business events, joining professional organizations, participating in community groups, developing relationships with complementary professionals, and staying connected with existing clients and referral sources.

Rather than approaching every interaction as an immediate sales opportunity, effective networking focuses on building familiarity, credibility, and trust over time. When people understand what an agent does and trust that agent to take care of their contacts, they are more likely to make referrals when an appropriate opportunity arises. For Medicare agents, this can be particularly valuable because Medicare is often connected to major life transitions such as retirement.

12. Client Referrals

Word of mouth is one of the most powerful tools in advertising, no matter what the product is. Nielsen found that 83% of their survey respondents claimed to trust the recommendations of their friends and family. Since trust is such a crucial component of the sales process, these recommendations become invaluable. If you can get your audience to refer your brand to their closest acquaintances, then they are already doing the heavy lifting for you. Reach out to your clients, particularly the ones who have had great experiences working with your agency, and ask if they would be willing to spread the word of how you helped them. These grassroots efforts can yield long-term benefits for your agency.

13. In-Person Seminar Events

Seminars are a classic sales tactic when it comes to selling Medicare. You can utilize your various online platforms – website, social media, email marketing – to promote these events, allowing you to get invaluable face time with your prospects. By providing a high-value educational experience, agents can position themselves as trusted authorities. Even better, you can roll these seminars into one-on-one meetings with your attendees, allowing you to understand your clients needs so that you can connect them with the coverage options they need.

14. Digital Webinars

Hosting webinars is a great low-cost way to directly engage with a group of qualified leads, allowing agents to establish themselves as trustworthy resources. For agents, hosting a webinar is as simple as setting up a Zoom call and posting the invitation across your social media profiles. These webinars can cover any topic that would be valuable to your audience, and may even feature a Q&A segment at the end of the call where agents can speak directly to their audience. If you already host in-person seminars, you can simply repurpose this same content and share your screen to present it to your digital audience.

15. Networking Groups

Networking groups can be an effective lead-generation strategy for Medicare agents, but their effectiveness depends heavily on the quality of the group and the agent’s commitment to building relationships. While these groups may not provide immediate results, they can be invaluable when it comes to spitballing new ideas with your peers in order to reach your target audience.

16. Community Organizations

Marketing Medicare to seniors often brings you into proximity with various community groups and organizations that these folks may belong to. You may want to reach out to these organizations to see if they would be willing to allow you to volunteer your time to answer Medicare questions for their senior audience. This would be similar to a seminar, but with less overhead required and a built-in audience of engaged leads. Explore local churches, hobby clubs, alumni organizations, community centers, libraries, senior centers, etc. and reach out to their leadership to see if they would be willing to partner with you.

17. Community Events

Your agency may want to consider some local outreach efforts to spread awareness of your brand at in-person events within your community. Research local events and find some that might present a good crossover opportunity for your target audience. If you’re selling Medicare, then you might want to find events such as car shows, fairs, parades, bazaars, and other high-traffic events that might be attended by visitors aged 65+. You can set up a booth and possibly even hand out bottles of water or other generic collateral to encourage users to approach your booth. Once there, you can pitch your services and attempt to build a list of leads from those individuals.

Branding Your Medicare Agency

Branding is the process of creating a recognizable identity and reputation for an insurance agency. It encompasses much more than a logo or color scheme. An agency’s brand includes its name, visual identity, website, messaging, tone of voice, customer experience, and the way prospects and clients perceive the agency. The fundamental idea behind branding is to create recognition, trust, and differentiation. Medicare prospects have many options when choosing an agent, and insurance can be a confusing and highly personal purchase. A strong, professional brand helps an agency communicate credibility before a prospect ever speaks with an agent.

18. Optimize Your Digital Brand

When it comes to your agency brand, consistency is everything. When potential customers are researching your business online, you want to ensure that the information they find is both relevant and consistent. Before you even begin your marketing efforts, it would be a good idea to review your presence on various platforms, including your Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Yelp, and various social media outlets. Be sure that your brand name is identical across these platforms, as well as your website links, contact information, logo and branded imagery. This provides a sense of cohesion to your users when they find your agency online, which helps to establish ongoing trust for your brand.

19. Branded Merchandise

If you are attending in-person events, then having branded merchandise can be a great way to create a lasting impression with your audience. These items can take any form you want; branded shirts worn by your team, or merchandise featuring your logo such as pens, drink koozies, stickers, etc. You could even take this to the next level by equipping these items with a QR code that links back to your website, imbuing these items with ongoing advertising potential.

20. Branded Outreach

For agents who want to advertise locally, there are a number of solutions that can allow you to reach those in your own community. Yard signs, local sponsorships, billboards, etc. are all great advertising options. Ensure that your messaging for these ads is concise and actionable, and that you are providing a next step for those who need your help.
