The Differences Between Medicare Supplement Plan G vs Plan N
April 26, 2019
As a Sales Director at Pinnacle Financial Services, one of the most common questions I get is about all of the differences in the Medicare plans available. Today I am going to spend a couple of minutes going through the differences between Medicare Supplement Plan G vs Plan N.
First, let’s discuss Medicare Supplements in general. A Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) policy helps pay some of the health care costs that Original Medicare doesn’t cover, like:
- Copayments
- Coinsurance
- Deductibles
Medigap policies are sold by private companies like UnitedHealthcare, Mutual of Omaha, and Aetna to name a few.
Medicare Supplement plans are standardized by the government from a Plan A though a Plan N. In essence every insurance company that sells these plans has the exact same benefits.
Two of the most popular plans are the Plan G and the Plan N. They both cover most of the gaps in Medicare with some slight differences.
First Plan G: Plan G will cover all of the gaps in Medicare A and Medicare B except for the Part B deductible which is $185. This is one of the most widely sold plans in the Medicare Supplement world.
Next Plan N: Plan N will also cover almost all of the gaps in Medicare A and Medicare B. The client will be responsible for the Part B deductible of $185. There is also a gap in coverage of a $20 co pay for Doctor Office visits and for emergency room visits up to $50.
But at the end of the day the main difference can really just come down to price. Is the Plan N a big enough cost saving in premium from a Plan G to overcome the additional co pays associated with the Plan N.
