The Secret Behind Top-Producing Medicare Agents During AEP
It’s Never Too Soon to Prep for AEP
Every year I hear the same thing from agents.
“I wish I would have started getting ready sooner.”
The funny part is, almost everyone knows AEP is coming. It happens every year. Yet many agents still wait until the last minute to prepare. Then they spend September trying to catch up instead of getting ahead.
Over the years, I’ve noticed something: The agents who have the strongest AEPs are not always the most experienced or the most technically knowledgeable. They are usually the ones who prepare early and stay organized. Preparation creates confidence. Confidence creates better conversations with clients. Better conversations create better results.
If I were getting ready for AEP today, these are the five things I would focus on.
Finish Your Certifications Early
This seems obvious, but every year there are agents rushing to finish AHIP and carrier certifications right before AEP.
You get busy. Questions come up. Sometimes there are delays that nobody can control.
Getting certified early takes that stress away. It also gives you time to focus on your clients instead of worrying about whether you’re Ready to Sell. One less thing on your mind means more time for client conversations and the business activities that matter most.
Don’t Limit Yourself to One Solution
One of the biggest mistakes I see is agents putting all their attention on Medicare Advantage plans.
Your clients have more needs than that.
Hospital Indemnity, Dental, Vision, Hearing, Short Term Care, Cancer plans, and other ancillary products help fill important gaps. More importantly, they help you solve more problems for your clients.
I’ve said it before, you’re not just selling insurance. You’re helping people solve problems. The more solutions you have, the more valuable you become.
Take Care of the Clients You Already Have
Everyone talks about finding new clients during AEP. Not enough people talk about keeping the ones they have already earned.
Your current clients are your biggest asset. Stay in touch with them throughout the year. Schedule annual reviews. Answer questions. Let them know about changes that may affect them.
Before AEP begins, make it a priority to review your book of business. Look for clients who may need a check-in, a plan review, or a reminder that you are available if their needs have changed.
This is where having a CRM designed for insurance agents makes a huge difference during AEP.
When I talk about BOSS CRM, I’m not talking about technology for the sake of technology. I’m talking about having a system that helps you track your business, schedule follow-ups, and remember the details that strengthen client relationships. Technology should make relationships stronger, not replace them.
Never Stop Learning
The Medicare world changes every year. New plans come out. Benefits change. Compliance rules change. Carriers introduce new programs.
The agents who attend training events are usually the ones who walk into AEP with confidence.
Here at Pinnacle Financial Services, we have multiple in-person training events for insurance agents with all the carriers as well as many virtual events. If you are looking for digital training, we provide AEP training webinars to help agents prepare. I always tell people that learning is part of the job. If you stop learning, you eventually stop growing.
Have a Marketing Plan Before You Need One
One thing I’ve learned after years in marketing is this: Hope is not a strategy. Waiting for the phone to ring is not a marketing plan.
Before AEP starts, decide exactly how you are going to generate opportunities. Maybe it’s referrals. Maybe it’s social media. Maybe it’s educational events, direct mail, community partnerships, or digital marketing.
The important thing is having a plan before October arrives. The agents who scramble during AEP are usually struggling. The agents who planned ahead are executing. That is a big difference.
Build The Foundations of Your AEP Success
I’ve always believed that success during AEP is earned long before the first enrollment application is taken. The work you do in July, August, and September determines what October, November, and December look like.
Every year, some agents hope this will be their biggest AEP. Others prepare for it. The ones who prepare are usually the ones who feel more confident, more organized, and more ready when the season is over.
Pick one item from this list and start there this week. The earlier you prepare, the better positioned you’ll be when AEP begins.
Success during AEP doesn’t happen by accident. It happens with the right preparation, the right strategy, and the right partner.
