From the very beginning, Essence has been part of the change to improve the healthcare experience. It all started with a group of St. Louis-area doctors looking for a better way to provide high-quality care for their Medicare patients. In 2003, they formed Essence Healthcare, a Medicare Advantage plan that partners with doctors to improve the quality of care while lowering the cost of care.

That model of providing patient-first care was introduced as Lumeris in 2011. Today, as a leader in value-based-care technology, Lumeris empowers doctors with the tools and technology they need to provide better care for Essence members.
